Digital Technology

Types of Technology

Digital Photography

This type of technology uses light sensitive film and a series of chemical processes to transfer images to slides or paper

Captures light onto Charged Couping Devices (CCD's) and converts them into numerical data

Size of CCD changes the quality of the image

Digital Video

This type of technology deals with electronic storage of moving images. It's also a chemical process to store objects, but this time they're moving

Deals with frames and frame rates (typically 30 frames per second)

Compression/Expansion/Manipulation important characteristics

Personal Digital Assistants

Handheld devices that function like computers

Some examples include:
      • spreadsheets
      • internet
      • dictionaries
      • word processing
Multimedia
Program or product that can contain still pictures, moving pictures, sound, animation, text, motion pictures
Multimedia if two or more of these are combined
Examples: video production/editing systems (shown left is Pinnacle Studio 9); presentation software authoring tools (Power Point)

Multimedia in my field

Wanting to be an elementary school teacher, I would use a video editing program just like the one that is shown above in my classroom. I would use this to present information to my students using text, pictures, and video. This way different cognitive resources could be used and my students wouldn't be bored with me just talking to them. This gives them more of an interactive way of learning using different learning styles and interests.

Hypermedia
Program or product that contains media that are connected by links and allow a person to navigate through a document, resources, or system in a non-linear fashion

Technology in the Classroom

Digital Photography:
  • vsualizations for learning purposes (included in lectures and presentations)
  • encourage creativity
  • images in books
  • recording fieldtrips
Digital Video:
  • Switch up learning styles; instead of just lectures, a video could be shown (alternative form of assessment)
  • promote meaningful and collaborative learning
  • apply new knowledge for visual learners; or allow auditory and kinesthetic learners to apply new learning concepts
Personal Digital Assistants:
  • collecting real world data
  • access web from field
  • graph data
  • journal
  • mobile tutorials
PDA's in my field

To keep appointments for parent-teacher conferences

Multimedia:
  • Power Point
  • Video Editing Programs
Hypermedia
  • Commercial Multimedia/hypermedia packages
    • tutorials/instructional games/reference software
  • Commercial interactive videodisk packages
    • instructional problem or presentation
Digital Photography E-Reading

For the Digital Photography E-reading, I chose to read the subtopic on Images in Education. I would use this in my field to help my students relate to spatial intelligence (those who are "picture smart" and can relate to ideas with pictures) and to better their motivation to learn. I feel as if I use images in presenting my material, children will be able to relate alot easier instead of having to pull an image out of their brains. I also feel as if they will pay more attention to a lesson if there are pictures to demonstrate what exactly is going on. For example, If I were teaching my kids information on the geography of the United States, I would include a picture of a map and allow them to have a visual of this lesson.
